Saints give back on spring community day

A tradition since 1999, the College will host its annual Community Day on Wednesday, Feb. 23. During this day of service, classes are canceled so that students, faculty and staff can spend time giving back to the Twin Ports community.

Mary Anderson, director of career services and Jessica Ellingson, director of campus ministry, coordinate the volunteer opportunities and enlist members of the St. Scholastica community to participate.

First-year students will be participating in a volunteer activity with their first-year seminar classes called Dignitas. “Our primary focus has been to ensure Dignitas classes get out and volunteer together, so we usually start by planning locations and getting them signed up first,” said Anderson.

Those not participating in the volunteer activity of the Dignitas program have three other ways to get involved: signing up for a Duluth-based service project, planning a service project with their team or department, or doing a service project on their own from wherever they are. Last fall, 631 students, faculty and staff participated at 30 sites.

Some interesting projects that will be happening on Community Day include hands-on CPR and defibrillator training, making cards to send to veterans in nursing homes and a day-long mental health and first aid training put on by the College’s counseling center.
