Catholic studies lecture to examine artificial intelligence
The College of St. Scholastica will host Dr. Taylor Nutter for a virtual lecture about the Catholic perspective on artificial intelligence (AI) on Thursday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m.
Dr. Nutter, a core teaching fellow at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD, will discuss the ethical, spiritual and social implications of this emerging technology. The webinar will also examine the difference between human and artificial intelligence from a Catholic theological perspective. Topics will include the nature of thinking, spirituality and AI and the light that Catholic Social Teaching sheds on the ethical impacts and implications of AI.
“Catholicism has remained an indispensable resource for reflecting on our most important issues,” said Dr. Kevin Vaughan, director of Catholic Studies and Theology and Religious Studies. “And there are few issues that have the potential for such monumental upheaval in our society as that of artificial intelligence.”
The interview is part of the Catholic Studies Lecture Series and is sponsored by the Braegelman Program in Catholic Studies, a program that explores the Catholic intellectual tradition with students and the larger community. The program showcases Catholicism as a monument of human flourishing and is designed for those interested in deepening their knowledge of Catholicism’s rich tradition and its interaction with culture.
