St. Scholastica announces spring theatre production
The College of St. Scholastica is pleased to announce the spring production of Kimberly Belflower’s JOHN PROCTOR IS THE VILLAIN. The show, directed by Matthew Singletary, has been selected and finalized in collaboration with the dean of Arts and Sciences, the Fine Arts department chair, and the Theatre Club.
Dr. Ryan Sandefer, vice president of Academic Affairs, said, “Since making the difficult decision last spring to discontinue theatre productions at their previous scale, we have engaged in productive discussions between administration, students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to explore alternative options for sustainable theatre performances at the College. We are thankful for the valuable feedback and insights provided by students, faculty and staff, and we are committed to the ongoing reimagining of theatre. We look forward to a vibrant future for our theatre community.”
“As the president of the Theatre Club, I can confidently say that we are all incredibly excited to bring live theatre back to our campus,” psychology and music major Emmie Hinnenkamp ’25 shared. “This show represents a fresh start and is a way for us to showcase the passion and creativity that has always been at The College of St. Scholastica. We are a few days into the rehearsal process, and I can already tell that this is going to be an important show. We cannot wait to share this experience with the community; it’s a testament to resilience, collaboration and our love for the arts. Personally, I am honored to be a part of this amazing cast in my final semester here at CSS!”
Director Matthew Singletary said, “I’m particularly excited to be directing this show at The College of St. Scholastica. I’ve been a fan of Ms. Belflower’s play since it premiered at the Studio Theatre in Washington, D.C., and count myself extremely fortunate to be working on this production with such an immensely talented group of students. This will be an event not to be missed!”
JOHN PROCTOR IS THE VILLAIN will run March 21–29, 2025, at the St. Scholastica Theatre. Belflower’s sensational new play is set in a small town in Georgia, imagining contemporary high school students exploring the American classic through the lens of the #MeToo movement. When scandal rips through their town and tears their lives apart, several teens question who they truly are and, more importantly, who they want to be.
