From Vespers to voices: Holiday events at the College
The College of St. Scholastica warmly invites the community to celebrate the winter season through a series of holiday events. From the serene Advent Vespers service to the lively Messiah Singalong, these festivities offer celebrations of music, tradition and community.
Advent Vespers and Lighting a Tradition
The community is invited to ring in the holiday season at the College’s annual Advent Vespers service and tree lighting event on Tuesday, Dec. 4. The Advent Vespers service starts at 4:30 p.m. in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel. Following the service, the Lighting a Tradition event will take place on the front steps of Tower Hall. Cookies and cocoa will be served in the Tower Hall Foyer following the event.
O Holy Night
The St. Scholastica Music Program will present the 12th annual Christmas concert, O Holy Night, on Friday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 7, at The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary in Duluth, MN. Both concerts will start at 7:30 p.m.
The St. Scholastica choral, brass and string ensembles will share the Christmas story and spirit through the evenings of music. In that holiday spirit, a freewill offering will also be collected to benefit CHUM, a local nonprofit human services agency dedicated to ending homelessness and food insecurity in the Twin Ports.
Guide Us to Thy Perfect Light
The holiday festivities continue into the following week as the St. Scholastica Concert Band and Benedictine Bronze, the handbell ensemble, offer Guide Us to Thy Perfect Light. This festive holiday program will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mitchell Auditorium on the Duluth main campus.
Messiah Singalong
Later that week, the St. Scholastica Music Program and the Borealis Chamber Artists unite once again for the College’s 42nd annual Messiah Singalong on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mitchell Auditorium. This joyful evening features Handel’s beloved masterpiece; participants may bring their own music scores or purchase or borrow one at the door.
