Volunteers spent the day on campus and across the Twin Ports. Site highlights included:
- Northland Adaptive Recreation and Duluth Superior Sailing Association
- Buckthorn removal on campus
- Loaves & Fishes
- Udac & Duluth Community Garden program
- Three area elementary schools
WDIO caught up with the group volunteering with Loaves & Fishes. Students weeded the grounds of the Olive Branch, an emergency shelter for women and families in Duluth, MN. Education Abroad Advisor Callie Ronstrom explained to WDIO, “One of our values at the College is community, and so, part of what we’re hoping that we instill in the students is that sense of community and responsibility to the local communities that they are a part of while they’re here at The College of St. Scholastica.”
“It’s a great experience,” added Fergus Oulman ’28. “I’m really enjoying it and really connecting with the community and connecting with the other classmates.”
Volunteering with a group of students with Northland Adaptive Recreation and Duluth Superior Sailing Association, Dr. Jeremy Craycraft, associate professor of Music, echoed those sentiments in a Fox21 Online interview: “I think it sets the tone for the year for us. It’s making sure that students recognize that it’s not just about being on campus and studying. It’s about what we’re doing out in the community to just be good citizens. You know, the idea of volunteerism is something a lot of our students come to, but they may not have done it sort of on their own accord, and the idea is that even though we’re curating this they’re basically getting to the point now where they’re going to try to start thinking about volunteering on their own after college. And this is sort of just, I think, preparation for that.”
