Message from the Office of the President: Oct. 8 update
Greetings and Happy Saints Spirit Day,
We have a number of updates and announcements for you this week!
Indigenous Peoples’ Day
The College will recognize Oct. 11 as Indigenous Peoples’ Day for the first time in its 110 year history. The events will begin at 9 a.m. in the Mitchell Auditorium at the Duluth Kenwood Campus with an Indigenous Peoples’ Day proclamation and Honor Song performed by Jeremy Wilson and Brian Kingfisher. You can live stream the event here. At 3 p.m., Cassie Brown, Student Support and Engagement Specialist, will be presenting a Diversity Dish: Ojibwe 101. Zoom in and learn about the Indigenous peoples’ of this region. The day will conclude with a traditional feast at 5 p.m. in the Benedictine Commons. All are welcome to join!
Thank you to Amy Bergstrom and Jennifer Niemi for their collaborative efforts in honoring the many contributions Indigenous people have made to our community.
Homecoming returns: Oct. 15-17!
Our 14th annual in-person Homecoming celebration in Duluth is just around the corner! We hope you’ll join us for the festivities, including the Student Talent Show, Prism Music Concert, tours of the Greenhouse and post-game festivities. Be sure to come cheer on our football team Saturday, Oct. 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Public School Stadium as they compete in their first-ever Homecoming game as a member of the MIAC! You can see the full schedule of events here: https://www.css.edu/alumni/. Go Saints!
Mass with the Bishop
Bishop Daniel Felton, the Catholic bishop for the Duluth Diocese, will join our College Community for Mass on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel at the St. Scholastica Monastery. We hope you will join us! Refreshments will be served immediately following Mass in Tower 1115. All are welcome!
Give ‘Em Pell
The benefit of continuing to draw attention to the #DoublePell campaign remains high. Government relations leaders at the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) and MPCC affirm the value of drawing attention to the proposal to double Pell funding and encouraging people to reach out to members of Congress on this issue, even as debate continues in Washington about the size of the Build Back Better bill.
Social media is one way to lift up this issue. The MPCC and several other state associations of private colleges supported the creation of a 30-second video clip that you can consider using in any posts — you can find the files here. Thanks to those of you who have written to Congress advocating on behalf of our students!
New academic catalog
The College’s new academic catalog is complete, live and accessible here. I would like to thank David Bauman, Jeri Collier, Roberta Oberpriller and their staff for the tremendous effort it has taken to create this resource for the College!
Transfer guides
Our transfer admissions team has been hard at work! This year, we updated 180 transfer guides and added ten new guides. These are posted on the transfer guide webpage which was updated as a part of the new web launch. There are also 30 general education guides that were updated throughout FY21 that we will be adding to the webpage soon.
Thank you to Teresa Ipina and all those who helped in expanding and increasing the number of transfer pathways for our community college students!
