Community Day tradition continues

The College will host its 22nd annual Community Day on Wednesday, Oct. 6. During this day of service, classes are canceled so that students, faculty and staff can spend time giving back to the Twin Ports community.

Mary Anderson, director of career services and Jessica Ellingson, director of campus ministry, coordinate the volunteer opportunities and enlist members of the St. Scholastica community to participate.

“This year, understanding the safety concerns some members of our community might have, we are encouraging our community members to get involved in Community Day in ways that are comfortable for them,” said Anderson.

Participants can sign up for a Duluth-based service project, plan a service project with their team or department, or do a service project on their own from wherever they are.

First-year students will be participating in a volunteer activity with their first-year seminar classes called Dignitas. These projects will range from trail work to cleaning, painting, highway cleanup and letter writing.

Upper-class students, faculty and staff are invited to participate by signing up for a community site, volunteering with their club or athletic team, or selecting individual activities that might include helping a neighbor, donating blood, writing letters to residents in nursing homes or VA hospitals or sending letters and notes of gratitude.

“The College anticipates over 550 participants, either in a group event or activity or through individual services to the community,” said Ellingson. “Participants all share common goals of service to the community, making a difference in the lives of others and living out our Benedictine values of community and stewardship.”
