Using their range of disciplinary expertise, our faculty expose students to the broad field of biological sciences by providing individualized attention both inside and outside of the classroom.
And the individualization doesn't stop there. The curriculum includes a variety of courses that arm students with a strong background in the natural and social sciences, humanities and writing while allowing them to pursue their own individual interests through discipline-related extracurricular experiences — including faculty-led student research projects, pre-professional student clubs, and internships.
You can't learn biology with getting your hands a little dirty, and you do that through research. Here students have the opportunity to complete laboratory-based research projects on campus, under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
Students in this program have obtained research internships off campus at a number of different sites, including Hartley Nature Center, the Great Lakes Aquarium, Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI), and the US Environmental Protection Agency Mid-Continent Ecology Lab. Students may also apply to participate in summer research programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation at locations across the country.
To unite students who share a common interest in the biological sciences and to develop an integrated community that nurtures the mutual respect of the biological phenomena of the world in which we live.
To develop and teach creative science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curricula for K-5 students. We will employ an interdisciplinary approach to curricular development and classroom implementation by recruiting students from all disciplines including science, education, English and the humanities. Club members will collaborate with local elementary school teachers to improve, advance and enrich STEM education.
