Native Teacher Program


Welcome to the Native Teacher Program Homepage

The purpose of the Native Teacher Program (NTP) is to support pre-service teachers in increasing their understanding and knowledge base of Ojibwe language, history and culture. Students in this program will also receive social and academic support by faculty and staff on campus.  Students can participate in cultural activities, attend conferences and build a networking system that can support students in their professional career. 

Tuition support for students in teacher training programs

Tuition support is available for students who major in both the NTP and elementary or secondary education. Funding availability is dependent on grant cycles.  Participation in the program is not dependent on tribal affiliation.  

The Ojibwe Language and Culture component of the program is available as a stand alone major for students outside the School of Education or as a complement to other disciplines as well.  However, there is no financial support available for these students.

A grant-funded initiative to promote culturally competent educators

These grants are in place due to demonstrated need for culturally sensitive and bilingual teachers in K-12 programs in Duluth and surrounding areas. The Native student population far outweighs available resources, including teachers, for effective education. Within our Native youth lives the future success and well-being of our community.

The College of St. Scholastica Academic Excellence Award honors students who have demonstrated academic excellence in their area of study.

Fond du Lac Teacher Cohort Program

The Native Teacher Program is also available on the Fond du Lac Reservation. This cohort group is designed for those interested in pursuing the Elementary Education teacher licensure program. The Fond du Lac program is open to enrolled members and descendants of state and federally recognized tribes.

Fond du Lac Tribal College will serve as the fiscal agent of the project and the College of St. Scholastica will serve as the degree granting institution. The project will prepare American Indian teachers in elementary education with the goal of increasing American Indian educational success. Graduates will be able to implement best practices in American Indian Education and support other teachers, both Native and non-Native, to enhance American Indian education.  The School of Education, along with the Fond du Lac Tribal College, will be seeking funding for this program for fall of 2015.

Club of the Year: Indigenous Student Alliance (ISA) Icon The Indigenous Student Alliance (ISA) was chosen as St. Scholastica's 2012 Club of the Year.

ISA is open to all students and hosts a variety of events throughout the year.

Recognized for Excellence

MinnCAN: The Minnesota Campaign for Achievement Now recognized St. Scholastica's Native Teacher Program and its partnership with Churchill Elementary School in Cloquet in the Native American Student Achievement in Minnesota 2013 report.

St. Scholastica was named on the list of Top 200 Colleges for Native Americans by Winds of Change magazine.
