Are you feeling the pressure to start applying for jobs and internships? Job fairs may be the answer! Job fairs are a great way to meet companies and acquire job and internship information as you have the opportunity to meet various employers in person within a few hours. Furthermore, job fairs can be a great networking tool to practice up your elevator speech, meet recruiters, and create contacts within many companies. Best of all, you can do all of these things in the scope of one day! For the hours you would have spent searching for jobs online you will instead have met people in those organizations and learned about many organizations and jobs you may have missed online.

From my personal experience, attending the Minnesota Private Colleges Job and Internship Fair last year was an eye opening experience. The first thing I was surprised by was the sheer amount of employers, as there was a scope of employers I had never seen before. The second thing I learned was how to effectively talk to recruiters and network. Although it seemed intimidating at first, I found that talking to recruiters was valuable. I learned about internships and jobs, but career growth and networking. Finally, I received two calls within the next few days following the job fair - so it definitely pays off!

The good new is, there are two great job fairs that you can attend next month. The first is the Head of the Lakes Job Fair on Wednesday, February 12th, and is located at the University of Wisconsin-Superior from 1-5 p.m. This is a great fair to connect with local and regional employers, and get a feel for jobs and internships being offered in the Duluth/Superior area. The second fair is the Minnesota Private Colleges Job and Internship Fair on Wednesday, February 19th (and scheduled interviews on Thursday, February 20th). This event is located in Minneapolis. This fair features employers ranging from local Minnesota companies to Fortune 500 employers, so there is an array of opportunities available.

For the Head of the Lakes Job Fair, there is no need to sign up in advance, and there will be a shuttle taking students from campus to the fair. As for the Minnesota Private Colleges Job and Internship Fair, you must set up an account and register through the hireSAINTS website. The fee is $15.00 if you register by January 31 and $20.00 from February 1-15.There will also be a bus going down to the cities for day one of the fair, so it will be easy to get down to Minneapolis!
