Marketing

Program Facts

  • Unique program design emphasizes liberal learning as well as practical marketing and management knowledge and skills.
  • Students complete liberal arts core as well as marketing management core covering such areas as strategic theory and tactics, accounting, human resource management, economics, computers, and management theory, ethics and decision-making.
  • Encourages student development of successful marketing traits such as excellent communication, creative problem solving and solid knowledge of marketing management.
  • Each student works with a faculty advisor to plan the sequence of courses that completes the major, and the elective courses that best fit his/her career goals in marketing management.
  • Marketing students select a specific concentration from the following areas:
    • Marketing Strategy – Prepares students to help an organization focus its resources on competitive advantages in order to “grow the business.” The theory of marketing strategy and the application of marketing plans are emphasized. Students learn the wide array of marketing options available and how to choose among them.
    • Marketing Analytics – Prepares students to help an organization utilize increasingly sophisticated analytical tools to evaluate the effectiveness of marketing strategies including price positioning, product differentiation, sales and incentive compensation plans, and customer and prospect behavior.

Major: 68 credits
Minor: 20 credits

Internships

Students may choose to complete an applied internship providing practical experience from a variety of diverse organizations in the region such as: Upper Lakes Foods Inc., Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, Townsquare Media Group, Target, Best Buy, 3M and Amsoil Corp.

Careers

Marketing graduates have gone on to work in a variety of industries, including advertising, public relations, health care, banking, manufacturing, consumer products, e-commerce, retail sales and hospitality.
