FAST FACTS: B.S. Health Information Management
*This tuition rate is in effect for the 2014-2015 academic year and is subject to change in subsequent years. Total program cost and completion time varies depending on each person's transfer credits and individualized program plan.
When we launched the first bachelor's HIM program in the nation in 1935, the industry was referred to as Medical Records. As medical records technology has evolved and developed, St. Scholastica has remained at the forefront, offering the first bachelor's distance program in 1981, the first online master's in HIM and the first master's program accredited by CAHIIM.
The B.S. in HIM program is offered in a 100 percent online format. Our online learning environment allows you to minimize the amount of time you're away from work and family while still working closely with our distinguished faculty and your classmates.
The healthcare industry is booming and the use of Electronic Health Record (EHR) software nationwide has increased the need for qualified HIM professionals.
As the healthcare system goes digital, hospitals are having trouble finding enough people trained in Health Information Management. Read about it in the Star Tribune's recent article.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 22 percent growth rate over the next decade for HIM and related careers.
AHIMA and the American Medical Informatics Association recommends that the healthcare industry increase the number of professionals [PDF] who are trained in workflow redesign, care process or quality improvement; EHR implementation; and health information management.
Are you interested in the healthcare field and are more interested in business and technology than direct patient care? Are you detail oriented? Do you have a desire to use information to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the healthcare industry? If so, HIM is a good choice for you.
Upon completion of this program, students are eligible to sit for the RHIA exam. We have curriculum options for RHITs with experience in the field and for those with no prior HIM experience.
"St. Scholastica's Health Information Management program is a versatile degree offering a vast range of opportunities in the field. Only being out of school for a few years, I have held a number of different positions across the U.S.; privacy officer in San Diego, business analyst in Milwaukee and project manager in Denver. The HIM program at St. Scholastica has a strong network of alumni, which is how I landed my current position working as a Project Manager for Just Associates, a consulting firm that focuses on helping healthcare organizations identify and resolve data integrity issues and ensure the accurate linking of patient data. CSS prepared me to succeed in this role not only through their challenging curriculum but also by instilling in me one of the college's core values of being a lifelong learner."
– Megan Munns, RHIA, Project Manager, CSS Alumna
"There are no words to express how much the Health Information Management professors, other students, and overall curriculum not only played a huge part in shaping me into the professional I have become, but also helped guide me down the right path to land my dream career. I couldn't be a bigger advocate of the HIM program at CSS for those that are interested in the healthcare field, but are not interested in delivering direct patient care. I will be forever grateful for my experience there and couldn't be more proud to be a CSS alumna."
– Kelsey Kruger, M.S., RHIA, Director of IT Integration, Optum Clinic
"If you are looking for the true "Gold Standard" in HIIM education then look no further. Just as Yale and Harvard are synonymous with the highest level of business degrees, The College of St Scholastica provides the type of education required to tackle the challenges that lay ahead in the ever-changing healthcare field.
I would recommend any student to invest in a bachelor's and/or master's degree from St. Scholastica. Degrees cost enough as it is, so why not get the very best?"
– Martin Smith, HIM student
"St. Scholastica's HIM program prepared me for a leadership position right out of college.
I had been given the opportunities during my time at CSS to network and build relationships with other HIM professionals, which ultimately led to the first job I had."
– Asia Johnson, 2001 HIM B.S. and
2007 HIM M.S. alum
