FAST FACTS: B.A. Accounting
Accountants are vital to the success of any business, large or small. An accountant performs traditional auditing services, but also may offer financial, strategic and tax advice to people and corporations; implement and develop advanced accounting software; or investigate and detect fraud and other criminal misconduct.
All classes are offered in an accelerated format, with eight-week terms instead of the usual 16-week semesters. Many students enroll in two classes at a time and attend class year-round. This allows you to complete your degree in fewer than three years, depending on transfer credits and other prior learning.
Classes also are scheduled in the evening or online, making it easier to find balance in your work, family and school obligations.
Our B.A. in Accounting program prepares students, and prepares them well, to sit for the CPA exam. In 2012, of all the exam sections taken by the 17 St. Scholastica students, 79.1% of those sections were passed and completed, compared with the average pass rate of 49% (Sources: 2012 NASBA report and MNCPA).
Students wishing to complete the CPA track are required to take a few more credits. The additional credits can be met through course transfer, elective courses, or even through taking graduate-level business classes. Students can complete up to half of their MBA or M.A. in Management coursework while achieving their 150 credits at the same time.
Employment growth in the accounting field is expected to remain strong for the next decade. Accountants are critical to the success of businesses, corporations, government agencies and non-profit organizations worldwide. Through their ability to prepare, analyze, interpret and use financial information in the process of business decision-making, accountants are highly-valued business professionals.
The Bachelor of Arts in Accounting curriculum at St. Scholastica prepares students to take the CPA or CMA examinations, and includes core business courses to understand how an accountant fits into the broader picture at an organization.
