Associate Director of Admissions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer scholarships?
Yes. The College of St. Scholastica offers 50% tuition scholarships to international students who are accepted for admission.
What about the weather in Minnesota?
Minnesota, like the rest of the northern states and countries, has four seasons. You will need to be prepared both for beautifully warm days and for cold and snowy winter weather. Our international students greatly enjoy the range of winter activities available.
May I live off campus?
Undergraduate international students are required to live on campus their first two years. This enables them to easily participate in campus activities and get to know their classmates and professors quickly. With permission, students may live off campus during their final two years.
May I work off campus?
After you have completed your first year you will be eligible to work off campus if you have special financial needs and can find a job in your intended career field. You may also apply for on-campus jobs at any time.
May I transfer credits from other institutions?
Academic transcripts from other institutions are carefully reviewed by the College and credit is awarded as appropriate. Those who have taken IB, AP and similar advanced course work are eligible to have credits awarded for their work.
May I stay on campus during the breaks including summer?
Yes. There is a modest charge for room rental during the summer months. During break periods you will have to provide and prepare your own food since the cafeteria is closed. Several international students stay at the College each summer.
Do you offer an ESL program?
Students needing additional English language instruction are encouraged to enroll in intensive ESL courses with our affiliate Global Language Institute located at the College's St. Paul campus. GLI provides TOEFL and academic preparation, and will assist international students in applying to St. Scholastica.
Do I need to take the TOEFL if I am attending an English-Medium School?
Yes, unless you are a native speaker of English.
Do I need to take the SAT?
We strongly prefer that you take the SAT in the fall of your final year of secondary school. In some countries it is very difficult to schedule the test due to the lack of available dates, political unrest, or financial hardship. In such cases, the SAT is not required. Please advise your admissions counselor.
Do you accept the College Board Common Application?
Yes. We prefer that you use the College of St. Scholastica International Application but will also accept the Common Application available on the College Board's website.
What are the deadlines for applications?
We prefer to have all application materials in hand no later than March 1, but we will continue to accept regular applications until July 1. After that date it is not practical to complete the necessary paperwork and issue the I-20 in time to schedule the visa interview and make travel plans. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis. Applications for the January term should be submitted by October 15.
