Fire Emergency

If you discover a fire, explosion, or smell smoke in the building:

Sound the Fire Alarm by activating the nearest fire pull station. Pull stations are located near exits and stairwells.
Immediately call 9-1-1 and give the following information:

DO'S

Leave immediate fire area and close doors and windows behind you to prevent the fire's spread.
Use stairwells to evacuate the building.
If caught in heavy smoke, stay near the floor, take short breaths through your nose, and move to the exit by crawling.
If the nearest exit is blocked by fire, heat, or smoke, go to an alternate exit.
Assist disabled persons in exiting the building. If these persons are unable to use the stairs, assist them to a stairwell and call 9-1-1. Inform them of your location and emergency crews will respond to assist to remove them.
Before opening a closed door, feel the door and/or doorknob, if either is hot, do not open the door. Find an alternate exit.
If you are trapped in a room, call 9-1-1and give your location. Hang an object out a window to attract attention.
If there is no window, stay near the floor where the air will be less dangerous. Shout at regular intervals to alert emergency crews of your location.
Once outside, move to a clear area away from the affected building. Keep streets, fire lanes, hydrants, and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and crews. If weather is inclement, move inside anon-affected building.

DON'T'S

Do not use the elevators.
Do not attempt to fight the fire.
Do not reenter the building until authorization to do so is issued by campus security or the proper authorities

BE PREPARED

Know how to activate the fire alarm.
Know all building exit routes. Elevators should not be usedforexit in the event of a fire. Keep all exit routes free of obstructions.
Have the campus 4000emergency telephone numbers attached to your phone.
