The College has gone Google. Google Apps (Gmail) that is. Responding to requests from our faculty and students, we have begun the migration from Novell GroupWise to Google Apps for email and calendaring.
As a community, our adoption of Google Apps provides us with an opportunity to take advantage of some exciting improvements in how technology can be applied to learning, teaching and working. Our goal is not only to better understand that potential, but also to identify areas of opportunity and work together with the entire community to use these new tools in the best way possible. Please understand that the decision to make this change, and the entire transition process, has been undertaken with the greatest intentionality and attention to the needs of our community. While we do not diminish the effects of the short term stress associated with a change like this, the significant expansion of capacity and functionality will be well worth the effort.
We would like to heartily thank the eager and diligent beta testers who contributed to this process. They are truly stewards of this community and consummate professionals who will continue to be of service by transferring the experience they now have on to their peers.
We have created a frequently asked questions page to share solutions, tips and best practice information with the community. Project managers are Will Rossing, Network Services and Chris Bacigalupo of the EIS group.
Getting started is really simple!
Log into your Google powered css.edu account (your email address is the same as it has always been) by going to http://email.css.edu.
You should be able to login with your current network username and password. If not, reset your network password. You can do so by going to this link.
09/21/1010: All previous users of groupwise should prepare for the full disconnection of that server from our infrastructure. After 10/01/2010 You WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS GROUPWISE. Please ensure that you have retained, saved, or had migrated all items to which to wish to have access.

Some of the concerns expressed by our community surround functionality previously enjoyed in Groupwise which is not available in Gmail and for which, at this time, a solution is not available. These include:
Items such as this represent important functionality which will require us to examine process and work together.
Several issues are of crucial business concern and we have developed our response to them.
One of the driving factors in our adoption of Google Apps was the vast resource of support materials provided by Google. Please take time to familiarize yourself with them. The IT department is happiest when we are empowering you to fish for yourself! There are many resources to assist with your new Gmail powered css.edu email account, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Most of the beta testers found the answer to their question within 5 minutes of simple web searching. Here are some starting points.
By this point, someone within your department has taken part in the beta test phase and can be a resource for you. Also, the helpdesk@css.edu and the friendly Google buddies in the IT department are available to assist at any time.
We've also created some resource pages which are directed to specific user needs. These will continue to evolve as our use of Gmail continues.

Send your official news items - the "need to know" kind - to either Student or Faculty-Staff Bulletin. They are at studentbulletin@css.edu or fsbulletin@css.com.
Anybody with a CSS email account can send to both announcement groups, however, you will only be able to view/receive announcements from the Group in which you are a member.
In Google Apps, at the top of the Google Page, click "more", then "Groups". You will see a listing of all the Groups of which you are a member. Just click your Announcement Group and you can see a history of announcements. As an alternative to emailing an announcement, you can also post an announcement by clicking "new post".
If you wish to unsubscribe from the Groups web page (at the top of the Google Page, click "more", then "Groups"), click your announcement group at the right, then click the "Edit my membership" link and select one of the following:
Then click "Save Settings".
It is your professional and community responsibility to stay informed about the college. These are the official means by which we communicate. If you opt to not receive these emails, you do so at your own risk of being un-informed.
To assist with the creation of contact groups associated with your account, we've developed a self service, password protected group creator. Using this tool, in the directory, you can have a file automatically emailed to you which then, once imported, will create a contact group. Please view this exciting video.
The Google Contact Group Creator can be found at:
