BEST Party Model: Shaping Party Environments to Prevent Sexual Violence
The Be Equal, Safe, and Trustworthy (BEST) Party Model is an environmental assessment, primary prevention strategy to work to shape environments which are safe and respectful for all. Parties are used as a target environment to combat issues of sexual violence, as they are often major parts of a student's life. The Be Equal Safe & Trustworthy (BEST) Model is additionally being used at the College of St. Scholastica to shape environments, beyond the party, including residence halls and athletic environments to create a culture of gender equity and non-violence.
The BEST Party Model outlines how to:
-Create accountable relationships between the campus party houses through mutually beneficial agreements.
-Develop a CCCR process for effective prevention and intervention of sexual violence at parties.
-Set up the physical space for a party so it is more fun and less threatening for women.
-Implement house party policies and procedures that set clear expectations of respect and safety for women to ensure everyone has a good time.
-Explain how and why to set and enforce these expectations.
-Guide methods of implementation so it doesn't stifle the overall party environment.
-Create an internal and external infrastructure for party houses to creatively build, monitor, and enforce respect and safety in the party environment.
-Train select students to form "Party Squads" to effectively achieve this goal.
-Use ongoing CCCR processes to assess and identify critical elements of the party environment that increase and/or decrease the likelihood of sexual violence.
-Implement prevention strategies that address these strengths and weaknesses to make parties more enjoyable.
-Establish a clear policy on what to do if sexual violence occurs at a party.
-Build and strengthen a system of accountability between fraternities and the university that ensures fraternities are doing what is necessary to create a safe, respectful (and fun) party environment. The system of accountability will also address weaknesses that are found in the application of the BEST Party Model.
