Preceptors and Clinical SitesBecome a preceptor
Just as you once depended on the expertise and guidance of an experienced health care professional, so too does the next generation of health care workers. Share your experience and help educate tomorrow's nurses.
The Graduate Nursing program at St. Scholastica has precepting opportunities available in the following areas:
- Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner
- Family Nurse Practitioner
- Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
- Clinical Nurse Specialist
Are you eligible to become a preceptor?
- Must be a practicing physician or nurse practitioner
- At least one year of clinical experience needed, preferably two years
- Must be located in Minnesota or Wisconsin
- Must be able to make the required time commitment
CEU credits
Precepting for at least 120 hours during the five-year re-credentialing cycle will earn you 75 continuing education credits

The benefits of precepting are two-fold; personally, it helps me be on top of the most current information. I am a sharper NP because of this.
On the other hand, precepting new NP students allows clinical sites to educate them in not only best practices for patient care, but also in how to navigate an integrated health care delivery system. In the six years I've been precepting, five of my students have been hired by Essentia Health.
Students are seeing the appeal of rural sites in that they are excellent in using a team model of health care delivery, which is responsible to the NP practice. This helps recruit and retrain quality nurse practitioners.
