CPR & FIRST AID COURSES THAT MEET THE QUALIFICATIONS

FOR THE OT PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  

Option #1: AMERICAN RED CROSS COURSES

American Red Cross professional rescuer courses are designed for people with a job-related duty to respond in an emergency, including nurses, law enforcement, EMS personnel, fire fighters, business and industry emergency response teams, lifeguards, flight attendants, and others who must take action in emergency situations.

•A.     CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

Designed for individuals with a duty to respond to emergencies, this program combines discussions, video and hands-on training. Real-life rescue scenarios reinforce decision-making skills. Course includes:

• Responding to adults, children and infants experiencing breathing and cardiac emergencies.
• Using an AED on adults and children.
• Optional training in use of epinephrine auto-injectors and asthma inhalers

Course length: 7.5 hours. 2 year certification; classroom and blended learning options available

•B.     CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Refresher

To be eligible to participate in a refresher course, participants must have successfully completed prior training. This training can be verified with an American Red Cross Certificate or equivalent. Participants are eligible for a refresher course for an additional 2 years from the certificate expiration date as recognized by the Red Cross. It is important to note that this is not an extension of a certification. Once a certificate has expired, it is expired and the individual must take a full course.

Option #2: AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION COURSES

•A.     BLS for Health Care Providers - If you are not certified or if your certification has expired.

The American Heart Association's Basic Life Support (BLS) training reinforces healthcare professionals' understanding of the importance of early CPR and defibrillation, performing basic steps CPR, relieving choking, using an AED, and the role of each link in the Chain of Survival.  This course is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

Held at St Luke's Hospital, Essentia Health and several colleges and community agencies. Be careful to register for a course with the correct name.

B. BLS for Health Care Providers - Recertification

This course is designed for individuals who need to renew their certification.

FIRST AID COURSES

 A standard first aid course is required for all OT students upon entering the program. There are courses offered by both the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association. Register for a course that offers a 3-year certification.
