Teacher licensure programs

Elementary Education

The Elementary Education program provides students with a firm foundation in the knowledge, skills and disposition required to be successful in an elementary school classroom. Students are placed in a classroom setting early and often, developing a host of required skills that must be practiced as well as learned.  Graduates are eligible for teacher licensure for grades K-6.

Middle/Secondary Education

The Middle/Secondary Education program prepares teachers to lead classrooms in middle and secondary schools in one of seven subject areas: Communication Arts/Literature, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Spanish and Music. A focus is placed on field experience, which helps to develop skills that must be practiced as well as learned. Graduates are eligible for teacher licensure for grades 5-12. Music and Spanish education majors are eligible for licensure at grades K-12.


Non-licensure programs

Ojibwe Language and Culture Education

This program, housed under the Native Teacher Program, prepares students to be proficient in the Ojibwe language'; to establish a solid foundation in Ojibwe culture, traditions and history; and to understand effective teaching strategies and curriculum materials for working with American Indian children. This program can be combined with one of the above teacher licensure programs or taken as a stand-alone program for those interested in graduate study.

Educational Studies

The Educational Studies major supports career exploration for those following a field of study allied with education. This may include students who have a desire to run children's homes, in-home day cares; healthcare students who's profession involves educating patients and their families; students who plan to be involved in the ministry of religious education; individuals who hope to learn how to effectively home school their children; those who aspire to be college professors; and international students who may have different needs when teaching in a different country.
