This is a great book for people who are just learning about American Indians. It contains many stereotypes that are believed about American Indians, in addition to factual information concerning that stereotype. I like it because it helps me to organize my thoughts when I am asked about stereotypes. This book is based on American Indian as a group (nation-wide). It is not specific to one tribe.
Brenda Childs is a Minnesota native who collected data concerning the boarding schools and the Red Lake nation. This book would be very useful as a classroom text to discuss the history of the boarding schools and the impact they have had on our communities.
Many people have the belief that the boarding schools were an institution that happened hundreds and hundreds of years ago. This is not true, many of our family members, who are still living, attended boarding schools. They were not a happy place for our children. This book gives great detail about the policies that were written, and the effect these boarding schools had and still have in American Indian communities.
This book is a must have for educators who are working with children at risk. Brendtro, Brokenleg and Van Bockern integrate American Indian child-rearing practices and Western psychology into a model that supports children. It demonstrates the use of the "Circle of Courage" which provides youth a sense of belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity.
The "Good Path" is the Anishinabe way of believing and living a good life. It discusses how we must honor Gitchi Manito, honor elders, keep our promises, be kind and so much more. It is a great book written by a local community member, teacher and mentor. I like this book because, not only does it bring the Anishinabe way of believing out to others, but it also contains activities for students.
For those teachers who are truly interested in multicultural curriculum reform but are not sure how to achieve it, this book is for you. This book not only discuss the need of curricular reform but also gives before and after lesson plans that demonstrate how it can be done. This is a "spendy" book but so worthwhile.
This book discusses the stages our children can go through in their development of racial identity. Behaviors that parents and teachers may see as our children travel through these stages are also discussed. The book includes discussion on unhealthy racial identity development, which includes racelessness, emissary, and oppositional theory. This discussion will include thought processes and behaviors that may be reflected by our children, including the thought pattern that school is a "white thing". This theory supports the idea that the "culture of our students" needs to be seen in our schools and curriculum.
