CSS students enjoy new dining facilities

Returning students grabbing a quick bite between classes are in for a big surprise.

Saints Dining areas — Storm's Den in Tower Hall, Greenview in Somers, and the former Beakers Coffee Bar in the Science Center — were completely renovated this summer in a $3 million update.

Steve Lyons, vice president of student affairs, called the new dining areas "modern and comfortable" for a wide variety of uses.

"The spaces look new and different, and dramatically increase the areas that students, faculty, and staff will want to hang out in to eat, study, and converse," Lyons said. "I think the spaces are a terrific success."

Greenview now has more of a restaurant feel than a school cafeteria, with cozy booths and benches mixed in with sleek, black chairs and tables. The centerpiece is a circular, wooden buffet counter and matching circular overhang with tall silver letters proclaiming: "All are welcome in this place."

Storm's Den incorporates the same open feel as Greenview, with matching booths and furniture, and new hardwood floors for a welcoming feel. Décor both in Greenview and in Storm's Den incorporates a signature honeycomb pattern with shades of blue, brown and yellow that complement the school colors. A large, shiny silver logo adorns the back wall. Students will also find a new convenience shop where they can pick up snacks and other necessities.

Meanwhile, the former Beakers café has transformed into an Einstein Bros. Bagel shop. The menu includes bagels, sandwiches, salads, Espresso-based drinks, pizza bagels, bagel dogs, and breakfast selections.

The new-and-improved facilities will feature convenient debit card use and longer hours than in past years. Aramark Higher Education, manager of the College's food service, is offering more culinary options and regular menu changes.

"There will be more variety of food, better nutritional options, and competitive pricing," Lyons said. "Also, venues will have longer hours, and more availability over breaks and weekends. Perhaps most importantly, the daily options will change over frequently to offer new experiences."

Saints Dining offers flexible event catering menus, he said, and student employment opportunities are available as well.
